I don't think it would have been this messy if they had just been honest from the get go. What's the use in hiding things? The truth always comes out, one way or another.

Chris's Gmail account was hacked by someone which resulted in the leak of the photos you've seen recently. Hackers have attempted to get into the account in the past and were successful in phishing the account this time by getting the password which accounts for the pictures being released.
