Chris Brown’s New Show to Break Clichés

Interview from BlackBook:

I hear that you’re doing your own reality dance series. How is that working out?
My dance series is still in the works right now. It’s not gonna be like “America’s Best Dance Crew” even though that’s an incredible show. But it’s gonna be different from the more cliché dance shows.

How are they cliché?
Because all of them are based on the same thing: Judges. You know what I’m saying? They get certain people to judge for ratings. This won’t be about big judges. No offense to JC Chasez or Lil’ Mama or none of them. Lil Mama dances to a degree but she’s not a trained dancer. JC, he danced in a boy band, so he was taught everything he danced. You know what I’m saying? They need to get the old Gods of Breaking. They need to get legendary dancers that people might not know of, but who are hands on, that do real choreography. Right now, we’re thinking it might be called “Break Nation.” It’s grittier, more street, showing the urban elements of hip-hop and b-boy. It’s not a bubblegum-type show. I’m just included because I believe in it.

Chris Brown Doesn’t Like His VMA Prospects, Says He’s Got A ’5 Percent Chance’ Against Lil Wayne, T.I.

July 29th, 2008

Chris Brown knows he has some stiff competition at this year’s VMAs.

After hearing he’s up against Lil Wayne, Usher, T.I. and Flo Rida, the Best Male Video nominee for his “With You” clip told MTV News, “I lost. There’s, like, a 5 percent chance now. Wayne is definitely on top of his game right now. He might win. He has the flavor.”

There’s also one other nominee that 19-year-old Brown owes some props to: “Usher has been in the game for a while.”

He does have some other opportunities to get himself a piece of a Moonman: His clip with Jordin Sparks for “No Air” has been nominated for Best Female Video, and voting for Best Dancing in a Video will begin after Friday’s “FNMTV.”

Brown is really just looking forward to having fun and rocking out on September 7 when the VMA festivities go down. “I think it’s going to be crazy,” he said. “Like, I don’t know if I’m performing this year or next year, but I want to see what the old school gonna do.”

Until then, Brown has a hit single to keep him busy. And the song “Forever” is not only the #3 song in the country — it’s also the new jingle for Wrigley’s Doublemint gum.

Brown, fellow R&B hitmaker Ne-Yo and “Dancing With the Stars” dancer-turned-country singer Julianne Hough recorded their own versions of classic Wrigley jingles. “When I first recorded the song, I didn’t think it was going to be a jingle or anything like that. When the song came out,” he said, “I fell in love with the record.”

“Forever” Originally A Jingle

Hit song ‘Forever’ unmasked as jingle for gum

Sharp-eared pop-music fans may have noticed a brief reference to an old chewing-gum jingle buried in “Forever,” Chris Brown’s top-10 hit. “Double your pleasure/double your fun,” the R&B singer croons in the chorus.

What listeners don’t know, and what Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. planned to reveal today, is that the song is a commercial.

“Forever” is an extended version of a new Doublemint jingle written by Brown and scheduled to begin airing next month in 30-second spots for Wrigley’s green-packaged chewing gum.

Brown is one of a trio of pop stars enlisted by ad agency Translation Advertising, a unit of Interpublic Group of Cos., to update the images of three of Wrigley’s best-known brands.

The campaign includes spots featuring R&B singer Ne-Yo doing his own take on Big Red’s “kiss a little longer” jingle.

And Dancing With the Stars regular-turned-country-singer Julianne Hough recorded a twangy version of Juicy Fruit’s “The taste is gonna move ya.”

But Brown’s “Forever” is the most ambitious part of the campaign. Brown was commissioned to write and sing the pop song and a new version of the Doublemint jingle, introduced in 1960.

First, Brown updated the jingle and recorded it with hip-hop producer Polow Da Don. Then, during the same Los Angeles recording sessions in February, paid for by Wrigley, Brown added new lyrics and made a 4½-minute rendition of the tune, titled “Forever.”

In April, Brown’s record label, Jive, released the song to radio stations and digital download services as a single.

After the song became a hit, Jive added it to Brown’s 2007 album, Exclusive, and re-released the album in June.

“Forever” reached No. 4 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 chart last week.

All three new Wrigley jingles are scheduled to be unveiled at a news conference today in New York, with each of them to be performed by the artist involved.

The campaign illustrates a deepening of the ties between pop music and advertising.
