There is no duet by Rihanna and Chris Brown despite previous reports that the pair had recorded a song together, a label source tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“Contrary to published reports, Chris Brown and Rihanna did not record a duet after the incident,” says the source, alluding to Brown’s alleged assault of his girlfriend last month.

Conflicting reports about a duet may have arisen because of a standard practice used during the development of new material. Last year, Brown and producer Polow da Don did write a song together, says the source.

Then, the source continues, “around August or September of 2008, Chris and Rihanna’s vocals were recorded as the reference vocals for this demo only. [But] the song was never conceived or intended to be a duet between them, and was later recorded by other artists.”

Reference vocals are created to give an understanding of how the writer intends a song to be sung on demo tracks sent out to other artists before the final recording process.

Turns out, the song was called “Bad Girl” – with lyrics focused on a women who overspends on designer goods – and was recorded by the Pussycat Dolls for the Confessions of a Shopaholic soundtrack. But the reference vocals for the song made by Rihanna also leaked to the Internet in January.

Adds the source: “Nothing has been recorded by Chris and Rihanna together since February.”

The confusion may also have been caused by the fact that Brown and Rihanna did record a duet last year called “Stronger,” which was meant for Rihanna’s album, but was never released.

Sources connected with Chris Brown and Rihanna tell TMZ Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, wants the judge to give Rihanna a pass from testifying because of leaks in the case.

We’re told Geragos and Rihanna’s lawyer, Donald Etra, believe Rihanna was compromised when her name surfaced as the alleged victim in the beating. They claim this and other leaks violate her privacy rights and therefore she should not have to further put herself out to the public by testifying against Brown in the case.

It’s further proof Rihanna and Brown are back together and in lockstep.

Geragos asked to meet with the judge in chambers, along with the prosecutors, on March 23 to discuss letting Rihanna off the hook. Brown’s arraignment is set for April 6.

A spokesperson for producer Polow Da Don has confirmed that Chris Brown and Rihanna have recorded a duet. According to CNN, the unnamed song was tracked with Don just days after Brown, 19, was charged with two felonies over his alleged February 8 altercation with girlfriend Rihanna, 21.

Don’s publicist said the singers — who reportedly reunited at a home owned by Diddy in Miami two weeks ago — completed the song earlier this week, though no other details were available on the track. A spokesperson for Don did not return requests for comment on the song, and spokespeople for Brown and Rihanna have declined to comment about the sessions.

“My heart goes out to both Chris and Rihanna for what has happened in the past,” Polow said in a statement. “They are both great artists to work with, and I wish them well.”

Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats on March 5 and is due back in court on April 6 for his arraignment in the case.

On Wednesday, Us Magazine reported additional details on the song, quoting an unnamed source describing it as having a theme “about being stronger and growing stronger in a relationship. … The song was originally created for Rihanna before the fight. However, it wasn’t initially slated for Chris to be on the song.”

The source added: “The funny thing is, the song expresses the emotions that both Chris and Rihanna are feeling at this moment — facing challenges and overcoming the ups and downs of a relationship in which you become stronger.” The singers were described as being “very playful” in the studio during the session.

A month before the alleged incident, MTV News reported that the couple, who have been very private about their yearlong relationship, had actually already worked on their first original track together. The song, “Bad Girl,” which leaked in January, was recorded for the soundtrack to “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and was produced by Polow but ultimately didn’t make the final cut for the album.

“I came from a Jerry Bruckheimer meeting after seeing the movie, and they were telling us all the music they needed for all the scenes and the characters,” Polow told MTV about his sit-down with the movie’s producer. “So that night, I went to the studio and I was telling Chris about [the meeting]. And he was like, ‘Let’s get on it.’ It was crazy, because Jerry Bruckheimer’s dream was to have a song from Rihanna (for the movie), and I delivered Rihanna and Chris Brown in 24 hours. So they were like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’ “

In the song, Rihanna talks about her shopping addiction, her penchant for bags and shoes and her not-so-thrifty purchasing habits. “Need no bargain, need no sale/ I want the best, I dress me well,” she sings. Brown chimes in with a rap about his better half toward the end of the track. “She’s a walking store, I’m talking about her clothes/ I just pause, I’m in awe, ’cause she’s a fashion show.”

At the time, Polow praised Brown’s energy and work ethic, as well as Rihanna’s unique voice and easygoing attitude and said, “We actually did a lot more records that hopefully will be coming soon.”

Also, closed-door court hearing set for singer on March 23.

Just hours after reports surfaced in the New York Post on Thursday (March 12) that Chris Brown was unhappy with his management team, his crisis PR firm and his lawyer over their handling of his alleged altercation with girlfriend Rihanna, Brown’s team responded and said the rumors are not true.

The Post, citing unnamed sources, reported on Thursday morning that Brown was upset and “looking for a whole new team” because the 19-year-old wanted to “apologize [for the alleged incident] much earlier … and he was upset when the apology was finally released because it sounded so insincere.”

But Brown’s mother and co-manager said in a statement released on Thursday that the Post report was inaccurate.

“Reports that Chris is looking to replace his team, including [lawyer] Mark Geragos, [manager] Tina Davis and [publicist] Mike Sitrick, are false,” Joyce Hawkins said in the statement. “There are only two people who could make a change at that level on Chris’ behalf: his business attorney Kenny Meiselas and me — and neither of us were the source of this information.” Spokespeople for Brown had not responded to requests for further comment at press time.

Shortly after the alleged February 8 incident, which resulted in two felony counts of assault and making criminal threats for Brown last week, Brown released a statement in which he said he was “sorry and saddened … over what transpired.”

The singer has not made any additional comments to date about the incident, but on Wednesday he withdrew from the March 28 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards show following a reported flurry of protests from parents.

Also on Wednesday, Brown’s manager, Tina Davis, denied reports that she that she was the woman who sent the text message to Brown that sparked the alleged altercation.

Hawkins’ statement added that Brown’s attorney, Meiselas, informed TMZ, which broke the story alleging that Davis sent the text, that “the information they had was false.” And, just to be sure, she reiterated, “So there is no room for doubt or misunderstanding, let me state unequivocally, that no change is planned or being made with respect to Mark Geragos, Tina Davis or Mike Sitrick. We are very pleased with the work they are doing.” Brown is due to be arraigned in the case on April 6.

TMZ also reported that Brown and lawyer Geragos had requested an “unscheduled hearing” before next month’s arraignment that has to do with Rihanna possibly testifying — or not — in the case. Geragos did not return calls for comment at press time, but Rihanna’s attorney, Donald Etra, recently told MTV News that his client would definitely testify in the case if subpoenaed.

Jane Robinson, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office confirmed that Geragos had requested the March 23 hearing, for which Brown does not have to be present, but said she could not comment on what will be discussed at the closed-door meeting.

Chris Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, has requested an unscheduled hearing even before Brown’s arraignment in the alleged beating of Rihanna — and it has to do with Rihanna testifying in the case — or not testifying!

We’ve learned the case has been officially moved to L.A. County Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg. She’s the judge who signed the search warrant in the case.

The hearing is set for March 23. It will take place in Judge Schnegg’s chambers. Prosecutors will join Geragos but Chris Brown will not be present.

Geragos is the one who requested the meeting. We know it involves Rihanna’s possible testimony in the case. Will Geragos ask the judge to block prosecutors from calling Rihanna or limiting her testimony? We don’t know for sure.

We do know the meeting has nothing to do with a plea bargain.

Chris Brown has withdrawn his name from consideration at the Kids’ Choice Awards, his rep said in a statement Wednesday.

“Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honor they have paid him in the way of nominations for Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated,” says the statement. “While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time. Once the matter before him has been resolved, he intends to do so.”

More to come…
